Sole e Ombra / Sun and Shadow is a first edition hardcover with 80 beautiful black and white images of Italy. This captivating body of work will pull you into another realm, a time of simplicity and beauty. You can almost hear the ragazzi calling to each other in the piazza outside your window...
The images in this book express the feeling of a culture - the social DNA that defines the interaction of people and their environment. To DiGirolamo, "They are not only the expression of life in a particular country, at a particular time, but they also narrate simple and powerful stories, expressing the fundamentals of human experience and universal life themes."
There are entertaining and insightful contextual commentaries for the photographs in both Italian and English. A few examples are below.

1954   Street philosopher - This is the first good image I took with the Rolleiflex, in front of the Roman Forum. 1954
In prayer - In a small church in Rome, the mid-afternoon sun rays penetrate the church and rest on the praying woman, as if a blessing from above.
Entering the Eternal City - This opening near Porta S. Giovanni in Rome is one of the gateways cut into the Roman wall separating the inner city from the outside. Following a rain showeer, the old tree is reflected through the passage on the cobblestones, casting the long shadow of the past on the sidewalk of today.
Country shoes - These country shoes, called "Ciocie", are found in the region of Ciociaria, south of Rome. They recall the old Roman sandals.
The sentinel - Wearing the "ciocie", this strong woman seems to be guarding the access to the cobblestone alley.
Dali on deck - The surrealistic world reflected in the polished vent of this boat made me think of a scene by Salvador Dali and is in contrast to the solid reality of the wooden hatch.
